The Programme

The programme prevents falls and at the same time strengthens the muscles. This is achieved through complementary neuromuscular, sensorimotor and physiological adaptations. It is based on three central components: progressive strength training of the lower extremities, progressively intensified balance exercises and walking training. The exercises are performed at least three times per week and their intensity is increased over a period of 8 to 26 weeks. [1–3]

The programme deliberately follows a multifactorial approach, since falls in older people are usually caused by several factors. Its fall-preventive effect is therefore not based on a single mechanism but on several changes acting in parallel.

Mechanisms of Fall Prevention

Falls occur, among other reasons, when the postural control system cannot compensate for a loss of balance in time. Manabi addresses various components of this system:
